topic this avalanche of business texts has only added to the confusion. Currently, there at least a hundred working definitions of leadership accepted within the academic community (Manz, et al,  p. 275). Furthermore, many of these definitions of leadership are contradictory (Larson, 1998). Undoubtedly, the reason why leadership has garnered so much attention in recent scholarship is because it is  widely recognized as constituting a vital element for business success. However, leadership as a topic continues to elude efforts to categorize it and reduce it to simplistic axioms that  can be easily applied. This fact supports a main premise from Max DePrees 1989 Leadership is an Art, in which DePree maintains that leadership is a neither a science  nor a discipline, but is, rather an art. The following discussion contrast and compare DePrees text with another "leadership" book by Kathleen Sanford, Leading with Love (1998). Max DePree/Leadership  as an Art The Herman Miller Company was founded by Max DePrees father, D.J. DePree, in 1923 and is one of the countrys largest manufacturers of office furniture. Beginning in  the 1950s, DePree introduced "The Scanlon Plan," under the leadership of Dr. Carl F. Frost (DePree, 1989). Under this plan, when an employee suggests a method that improves productivity, they  receive a portion of the financial gains that result from their ideas (OToole, 1995). Also, at Herman Miller, 100 percent of all full-time employees who have worked with the  company for a year are stockholders (DePree, 1989). Having employees who through stock are also "owners" of the company is a key element to the participatory management that also characterizes  this firm. Every month at Herman Miller, top managers report directly to the workers concerning the companys productivity and profits, as well as the status of employee suggestions (OToole, 1995).
