This article is a definite change from the often, singular and dictatorial management styles of the past: "my way or the highway", "weve always  done it this way," or "dont let the door hit you on your way out." Organizational literature has been dominated by a thinking orientation, with feelings being ignored or  being seen as something that gets in the way of rationality and effective decision-making. We almost might remember a similar argument being presented as an oppositional ploy against women  in the workplace. Summary: This article proposes that emotional intelligence, the ability to understand and manage moods and emotions in the self, and others, contributes to effective  leadership in organizations. Four major aspects of emotional intelligence: 1) the appraisal and expression of emotion, 2) the use of emotion to enhance cognitive processes and decision making, 3)  knowledge about emotions, and 4) management of emotions, are described. Emotional intelligence According to Mayer (1997) emotional intelligence is "the ability to perceive emotions, to access and generate emotions so  as to assist thought, to understand emotions and emotional knowledge, and to reflectively regulate emotions so as to promote emotional and intellectual growth." In his book, The Fifth Discipline:  The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization, Peter Senge (1994) might rephrase the same concept of emotional intelligence by saying, "Small changes can produce big results, but the areas  of highest leverage are often the least obvious."
