    LEADERSHIP For The PaperStore, October 2000 properly! Warren Bennis said that managers are people who do  things right and leaders are people who do the right thing (1989, 12). This is a statement that has been repeated thousands of times and while it is catchy, it  does not necessarily tell the story. The dictionary says that managing is conducting, coordinating, being in charge of and having responsibility for. On the other hand, leading is influencing, guiding  in direction, course, action or opinion. Managers master routines and create efficiency. Leaders acquire vision and judgment and become effective (The Difference Between Leadership and Management). This is a far  more acute description that provides the student with more information regarding the differences between managing and leading. Ibrahim and Cordes offered a comparison of the characteristics of leaders and  managers that provides even more information for anyone who is searching for the differences between these two positions (41): Leaders Managers Innovate Create Focus on people  Inspire trust Have a long-range perspective Ask what and why Have an eye on the horizon Challenge the status quo Have unique personalities Do  the right thing Administer Copy Focus on systems and structure Rely on control Have a short-range view Ask how and when Have an eye on the bottom line Accept  the status quo Are good soldiers Do things right The table displaying the different characteristics of the manager and leader is very revealing but one of the major  differences is that leadership is earned.
