describe a joint project implemented by the Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) staff specialists and the faculty of the School of Nursing (SoN) at the University of Minnesota whose purpose is  to "understand the elements or characteristics of work setting that influence the nurses ability to provide professional services" and also to "develop potential strategies for improving the work environment for  professional nursing practice" (Krichbaum, et al, 2007, p. 87). The original intention of the MNA and SoN collaboration was to investigate the nursing shortage. However, as they examined this issue  within the context of nursing work environments, it became increasingly apparent to these researchers that the working conditions in acute care environments was a prevalent concern (Krichbaum, et al, 2007).  After the initial investigation, Krichbaum, et al (2007) designed a research effort to investigate the phenomenon of complexity compression (CC) to greater depth that utilized an inductive method for  this purpose. Groups of nurses were asked to give their personal experiences with CC at the April 2003 meeting of the Assembly of MNA Practice and Education Leaders (AMPEL) group  (Krichbaum, et al, 2007). With members of the MNA and the SoN acting as facilitators, these focus groups that were formed explored both their feelings concerning CC situations and  the factors that made up the CC situation. Analysis of the data identified 147 factors related to CC that could be classified into six themes (Krichbaum, et al, 2007). The  themes and principal subthemes are as follows: Theme Sub-themes Personal Physical/mental exhaustion Family/individual issues Environmental Physical, Psychosocial, Cultural Practice Delegation, Conflicting responsibilities, Floating/cross training/unfamiliar tasks/needs, Time, No safety net,  Patient/family issues Culture-patients & staff Mentoring/precepting Systems System failures, multi-changes, lack of safety net, Documentation, Budget, Staffing, Technology Administration & mgmt. Ineffective, Lack of understanding of nursing, Changes in upper
