    magical reality which we often assume will last a lifetime and which will somehow make everything we experience easier to handle. And, with marriage we often assume that with a  partner in life we can rise above all problems. The truth, however, is far different than the fantasy. Love is powerful, this is true, but fleeting love, or love that  is not strong enough to survive, will not keep a marriage going, nor will it meet all the needs of any particular individual. And, when people get married there is  often a stage where complacency becomes more powerful than love or communication. It is with such conditions as this that partners begin to take each other for granted, and more  often than not, one of the participants of the marriage loses a part of themselves, feeling overwhelmed with a sense of oppression and loneliness. These are conditions that we  can find through many pieces of literature, poetry, and drama. In Henrik Ibsens play "A Dolls House," Kate Chopins short story "The Story of an Hour," Adrienne Richs poems "Aunt  Jennifers Tiger" and "Moving in Winter" and Gabriel Speras poem "Ex-Husband" we see many elements of this condition. In the following paper we examine each of these works separately, illustrating  the elements that speak of such disappointments. The paper finishes with a brief discussion of the works discussed. Story of an Hour Kate Chopins story is clearly one  that spells out disappointment and oppression in a marriage. The narrator has just been informed that her husband has been killed. We see that she begins to imagine a life  of freedom, a freedom that speaks to her individuality. She knows that, without the oppressive and disappointing reality of marriage, she will have the freedom to be herself and to
