The purpose of this project will be to consider several aspects of the use of software in the rental trade. It should be noted that although the use  of car rental is used in some aspects of the paper, and equipment rental in others, these are examples only and may be applied to different segments of the rental  market. Firstly, there will be consideration of the different ways in which software can aid the equipment rental trade. This means the project will need to look not only  at generalised software, but the value adding software such as total solution embodied by customer relationship management. Questions will needing to be answered will include as what software is currently  used and how it is used as well as the potential for future use as well as hardware availability. In undertaking research of this nature, it is hoped a  broad general picture may be put together that will lessen the required learning curve for any rental business looking at enhancing their use of IT, or even implementing an IT  system for the first time. The project will have certain constraints. Time and scope as well as budget constraints mean that any methodology will not be fully stratified. However, the  lessons learnt should be valid and may lead to further study.
