M1 is the MIS manager for  an educational services company in Durham, North Carolina. M2 is a project manager for a computer services firm in Raleigh, North Carolina. M3 is a call center manager  in Denver, Colorado. All are approaching retirement age and have been active managers literally for decades. How do you define a  successful manager? M1: The successful manager is one who has a department that runs smoothly most of the time but is able  to identify and act on problems while they are small and manageable. The people reporting to the manager understand that her job is to make their lives easier, and  they understand that she is always open to hearing any ideas they have in how she can perform better for them and for the department.  M2: The thing I strive for is to ensure that everyone outside the department knows that I am the facilitator. I am the clearing house through  which they must come in order to add, alter or remove components of projects. My people barely have time to do their own jobs. They certainly dont have  time to do theirs and mine too. M3: The successful manager is the leader of the group. What he says goes,  no matter what. Ive worked hard to achieve success in this company. I can tell my people what to do and they never question my instructions or authority
