case with many other inventors, Dr. Robert Buchan has developed a useful product that he now wishes to sell to consumers. His company, PreFone Integrated Products (PIP), is searching  for a suitable means of marketing its first product, and Dr. Buchan is finding that his strengths lie more in product design and development than in marketing.  The Situation PIPs maiden product is a phone filter designed to filter out unwanted, intrusive telephone calls.  Before the associated receiving telephone rings, the PIP filter gives a message to callers that if they represent a telemarketing company, then they need to hang up and note that  they should make no more contact with the number they have just called. Such notification meets the legal requirements as a "no contact" request, but it is effective only  with those companies whose workers know what numbers have been dialed. If the company is using a random number generator and dialer, then telemarketers frequently have no idea of  what number they have just called. Dr. Buchan has developed some marketing materials on his own, using only his personal computer and the  engineers propensity for facts. It is highly likely that Dr. Buchan has not adequately addressed the issues that would leave potential buyers questioning the products usefulness. He has,  however, invested more than $300,000 of his own money into the product and needs to recoup his investment without committing too much more financial resources to it before sales begin  to offset expenses. The company cannot be called financially sound in that it is so difficult for individuals to secure financing for such unusual products.
