His wife is frustrated with the fact that it hasnt come, and even more frustrated with the patience that the Colonel shows  in going day after day to the post office. All he has to get him out of bed each morning is the hope that his check will arrive. It soon becomes apparent that they are very poor.  His wife does not seem to be well and is anxious all the time about what is to become of them. Obstinately refusing to believe that the army would not  reward him for his life of service, he stubbornly makes the trek to the post office everyday.
