at the differences and similarities between the civilisations of Egypt and Mesopotamia, it is useful to consider the way in which the terms culture and civilisation can be defined, and  the ways in which they overlap. It could be said, for example, that culture is something which is learned, and although it has its foundation in basic human needs, it  is not solely confined to satisfying these.  For instance, although a baby has the instinctive desire for food, an adults preference for one food over another, or the times of day at which particular foods should be  eaten, is a result of learned cultural behaviours. Culture is transmitted from one generation to the next, and is dependent for its survival on each successive generation following the same  patterns; the way in which culture is taught is therefore also important.  Culture can be considered as a complex pattern of learned behaviours, which gradually evolves from one generation to another, and is subject to change  depending on outside influences from other cultures. If there is migration from one culture to another, then the behaviours of both the host and the immigrant community will change to  some extent: in Britain, for example, prior to the 1970s there were virtually no cultural influences from the Indian subcontinent except some colonial residues from the 19th century: by the  1990s, as a result of immigration and settlement from the subcontinent, Asian food and music had become an accepted part of the overall British cultural pattern.
