Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote and the Role of Sancho Panza

through the secondary characters existence we can sometimes see the primary character in a different light, learn more of the intentions of the primary character, and/or essentially have a lens  by which we feel we are participating in the story that unfolds. Sancho Panza in Miguel de Cervantes "Don Quixote" is one of those characters. He is friend, protector, and  devoted servant to a man with visions and dreams. He is also a lens through which we can see Don. In the following paper we examine the character of Sancho  Panza, illustrating how his presence in the story serve to not only support Don, but also provide us with a character that we can relate to in understanding Don.  Sancho Panza In the beginning of the story we see Don Quixote alone, and becoming immersed in a reality that is not real, but yet still wondrous and intriguing.  He begins to have some adventures on his own, such as that of "freeing a young boy from a flogging by his master. Later, he challenged a party of puzzled  travelers, engaging them in battle; but Rocinante tripped, sending Don Quixote to the ground" (Anonymous Don Quixote De La Mancha: by Miguel de Cervantes (1547 - 1616) donqu2.html). He  was beaten, and he returned home where he approaches Sancho and pleads with him. Sancho is a simple peasant farmer, but is mesmerized, and as well as perhaps concerned, with  Don. He agrees to go with Don, and embarks on the journeys riding a small donkey (Anonymous Don Quixote LDon02.html). From this simple examination thus far we can  easily see that Don needed a companion.
