and steps to take to meet the safety requirements. In other words, MIL-STD-882B are the requirements for safety while SAE ARP4761 is the guidelines to meet the requirements. We have  explained the purpose and some of the particulars of each document.] The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) Guidelines and Methods for Conducting the Safety Assessment  Process on Civil Airborne Systems and Equipment is found in ARP4761. These safety assessment guidelines were updated in 1996 (Society of Automotive Engineers, 1996). The Military (MIL) Standard (SD)  882B System Safety Program Requirements is issued by the Department of Defense and is to be used by all departments and agencies of the Department of Defense (Department of Defense,  1984). These safety requirements were initially initiated on 28 June 1977 and are known as MIL-STD-882A; they were then modified by the Department of Defense on 30 March 1984 as  MIL-STD-882B, which supercedes MIL-STD-882A (Department of Defense, 1984). The Department of Defense (Diet) notes that the "objective of a system safety program within the Department of Defense (Diet) is to  make sure safety, consistent with mission requirements, is designed into systems, subsystems, and facilities, and their interfaces" (Department of Defense, 1984). The Society of Automotive Engineers notes that the document  known as SAE ARP4761 presents guidelines to assure compliance with safety requirements and can be used to show compliance but these are not the only means of showing compliance (Society  of Automotive Engineers, 1996). These guidelines primarily relate to FAR/JAR 25.1309. The Guidelines present industry accepted safety assessments related to Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA), Preliminary System Safety Assessment (PSSA) and  System Safety Assessment (SSA). The document also provides information on various safety analysis tools such as Fault Tree Analysis, Markov Analysis and other tools that will be useful for the
