But again . .  . is Microsoft a monopoly? According to the classic definition of monopoly in the framework of microeconomics, it is and it is not. In terms of the framework of  simple truth . . . it obviously is. Far too often, a students textbook for an economics class or a study of corporate entities will offer a tried and  true definition of a classical or academic version of monopolies. However, such definitions can be misleading in terms of what that student actually sees in the "real world" as opposed  to the construct they read about. For the student working on this project, it is important to understand that Microsoft carries far more hallmarks of a monopoly than may be  generally assumed and it will be possible for him or her to demonstrate that through their report. Microsoft Basics and Economic Theory of Monopolies Microsoft offers something of  a living case study with its high profile litigation with the government, the publics fascination with Bill Gates, and the fact that Microsoft products are used by virtually (pun intended)  student, worker, or any other category of person who regularly uses a computer. While issues of income distribution and government redistribution policies regarding costs, revenue, profit and market structure are  inherent in the study of any company or organization, it is important to recognize the absolutely unique characteristics of Microsoft and understand that there has never been another organization like  it.
