    when the idea to communicate across the ocean--or even across the street--was something to shoot for. Today, in the twenty-first century, this is the future predicted by many as technology  continues to grow and virtually anything that can be conceived can be built. At least it seems that way. The development of a variety of communications may be  witnessed in daily life, and when delving into the past, one can certainly see that the future is a reality. Perhaps it is not the Jetsonian lifestyle as depicted in  the cartoon where food is dispensed on an assembly line, but things have come a long way since mom was the only one to dish out dinner. Today, people have  a choice of eating frozen dinners and prepared foods on supermarket shelves, some of which are quite tasty. The visual aspect of food is certainly apparent as packaging becomes more  and more complex. Individual servings of meals are created and sold in larger boxes. With all these new innovations, there is attention to speed and quality as well. And while  one can say that the world has come a long way in terms of things such as food, travel and entertainment, perhaps the greatest change has been in respect to  communication. Communications as it exists today has revolutionized business practices as well as social life. No longer are people tied to their homes waiting for a business call, or waiting  for the phone to ring by a boyfriend or girlfriend. No one has to keep the phone line open for that all important doctors call to come through. Today, with  voice mail, caller ID, call forwarding and call waiting, no one has to be a slave to the telephone. There is no longer any waiting by the phone for a
