PROPOSAL Patenting the breast cancer gene is  viable as a way for biotechnology to provide better medical care to individuals suffering from breast cancer and related diseases. Perhaps this discovery could serve to ease the  suffering felt by many. With new and improved methods of treatment there could be thousands and thousands of people who could be helped. Of course there are those  who stand on each side of the fence for whatever their reasons might be. Nobody is arguing the importance of such a significant discovery, nor is anyone unhappy with  the research, since it is literally mapping the genes that could end needless pain and suffering from things such as cancer. But there are downsides to this research as  well. BACKGROUND Government regulation is needed to act as a watchdog over the leading biotech companies so that companies can start working together, pooling their resources and their findings  so that biotech research can proceed more quickly. More lives are lost to breast cancer every day that a cure is not found. For now, the unregulated, competitive  spirit of the biotech race has led to a decrease in communication among researchers, resulting in little cooperation and hindering the timely creation of the full range of biotechnological breakthroughs.  Indeed, many had hoped that the various sides of this controversy would come to an understanding or at least a courteous "cease fire" on differences of opinion in research.  But, according to Leslie Roberts, (2000, PG), "any hope of collaboration between the rival teams broke down, with both sides accusing the other of bad faith".
