Open And Closed Glottis Pushing: Comparison

    Number of Pages: 7

    Summary of the research paper:

7 pages in length. Childbirth methodology consists of various ways in which to expel the baby both safely and effectively, with breathing and pushing techniques representing two of the most critical. During natural childbirth, the mother is coached to breath and push almost simultaneously in order to drive the baby down the birth canal; however, whether she chooses to push with an open glottis or closed glottis is up for significant debate as to the overall safety and efficacy of each application. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

childbirth, the mother is coached to breath and push almost simultaneously in order to drive the baby down the birth canal; however, whether she chooses to push with an open  glottis or closed glottis is up for significant debate as to the overall safety and efficacy of each application. "The very notion of a technique for pushing implies that  something needs to be done in addition to the bodys own efforts. A final concern with any directed approach is its potential to displace the mother s own natural  instincts" (Sagady, 1995, p. 29+). II. THE OPEN/CLOSE CONTROVERSY The glottis - the extended space between vocal cords - exhibits two distinctly different formations when opened and closed, with  the mother holding her breath while pushing during closed glottis pushing, also called Valsalvas maneuver (Sagady, 1995), as opposed to grunting and expelling air through open glottis pushing (Anonymous, 2002).  Depending upon the particular position of the glottis, certain aspects change the entire composition of the push: CLOSED * vocal cords are pressed together * airflow  interrupted * making vibration * use less energy OPEN * vocal cords are separated * free airflow * no vibration * use more  energy (Anonymous #2, 2002). The controversy that surrounds open and closed glottis pushing is whether or not open glottis is as effective  as its closed counterpart. Some contend that the additional power behind the nonbreathing push of the closed glottis is far more effective for moving the baby down the birth  canal by accomplishing it with less number and severity of pushes. "This is still the most popular method among medical caregivers in institutional settings today...Also, this is the fallback
