A diverse employee base, combined with on-the-job stress (and even job uncertainty) takes its emotional toll on employees - in other words, the employee of today  has a shorter fuse than those in the workplace even 15 years ago. As a result, many of todays managers face a variety of conflict situations ranging from allegations of  sexual harassment, to problems of deteriorating performance in a subordinate or colleague, to negative relations between employees, to outright physical violence. In other words, a managers job today doesnt just  involve telling an employee what to do and expecting that the employee will comply. The manager of today must recognize that, like it or not, conflict is going to be  part of the workplace, and he or she must takes appropriate steps to deal with any potential problems that conflict can bring.  Failing to deal with workplace conflict when it comes about can lead to a great many problems - in many cases, death has been the result of a workplace conflict  gone extremely awry. In response, the smart manager is prepared for workplace conflict. He or she will do what is necessary to  create an atmosphere that avoids the potential of such conflict. And if the conflict occurs, the wise manager will take steps to help defuse the situation through a variety of  technique and methods.
