That a multitude of situations arise where geotextiles are utilized in order to maintain the earths integrity speaks to the  nature of upholding its fundamental composition while at the same time making it workable for mans ongoing needs. II. USES The geotextile market has grown exponentially in the past  several years, with only a handful of other industrial sectors experiencing such phenomenal growth; from 1970 to 2000, the industry grew from ten million sq.m to fourteen hundred million sq.m,  credited in great part to Western consumption. Geotextiles, which have had a significant presence throughout mans historic existence, are typically applied in civil or environmental engineering fields, which automatically  brings about an association with geotechnical engineering. Materials and forms employed include textile sheets, non woven, woven, nets, grids, strips, grids woven from strips, sheets woven from strips, strips  made of narrow grids and natural fiber (Smith, 2002). The 1960s rang in a new approach to the textile industry, inasmuch as a tremendous change occurred throughout the industry  to the point where market demand was so low, a different approach had to be taken in order for the drop in synthetic textile clothing and carpets could be compensated.  This was the point where geotextile manufacturing incorporated a combination of natural and synthetic fibers, allowing for the various forms mentioned above. Some of the many geotextiles applications  include: * Separator * Container * Reinforcement * Filter * Mulching * Fences * Tension Membrane * Cushion * Road-Asphalt Overlay * Road Sub-Base (Smith, 2002).
