    of them. Her face is plastered on the eleven oclock news. Then there are the juvenile delinquents who think it funny to put a cat in a clothes dryer or  a microwave oven. And of course, animal abusers sometimes grow up to be serial killers or just cruel human beings. One recent case involved a man who in the course  of a traffic jam decided to take his road rage out on a little purebred pooch and threw him into oncoming traffic, thus killing him in front of his owner.  Penalties for such murder only carry a small amount of jail time, if that, and when this man was sentenced to about three years time, people thought it too harsh.  People in fact are divided on the subject of animal cruelty. Some value their pets as much or more than they do other human beings. They love their animals and  feed the street cats and the wild birds and make sure no harm comes to any of these creatures. For the most part, people are somewhat sympathetic to animals and  enjoy meaningful relationships with their pets. Still others do not like to clean up the messes of the four-legged creatures that so many adore. Yet, there are many positive aspects  of pet ownership. While many say that children should not be responsible for the care of a pet-or at least an adult must be prepared to step in-a pet  does give children some sense of responsibility, not to mention a long, loving relationship with another living being. Most pets make good playmates for children, and while it is true  that many young children cannot fathom the responsibility such care taking entails, they learn quickly about the rewards of feeding, brushing and petting. The animal responds with a purr, or
