For millennia man has looked to the sky, wishes to enter the domain of the featured creatures, not only to conquer nature, but to gain all the advantages that
were apparent form a time before aircraft were even thought possible. In the nineteenth century there were many attempts at flight using an array of strange looking inventions such as
the ornithopters. None of these were to work, there aerodynamic ratios in the machines made it impossible for them to fly. They were based on the method of flight used
by birds with the flapping of wings, the problem is that for a human to achieve flight in this way they would requires the heart to beat at over 800
beat per minute (AIAA, 2001). However man did not stop trying to fly. The next generation of aircraft was those that were designed to be lighter than air, but
still there was little success until , Orville and Wilbur Wright started to experiment with gliders, to which they later added engines and created the first mechanically powered aircraft. This
also increased the interest in the subject and developments started to emerge at the beginning of the twentieth century (AIAA, 2001). The work of the Wright brothers continued, but was
also joined by the work of aviators such as Santos-Dumont and Louis Bleriot who designed the first monoplane that flew across the English Channel in 1909 (AIAA, 2001). However, these
