While in some respects an individuals personality might remain constant throughout their life, in others there are  certain changes. Psychologists have proposed through the ages that personality is determined by genetic makeup. Some, in fact, have proposed that ones personality can be deduced based on  facial features and the like. While there is undoubtedly a connection between genetics and personality, a far more important determinant is culture and the manner and degree to which  an individual interacts with others. It can be proposed, in fact, that the degree to which an individuals personality changes over time is determined by such factors as social  interaction, experiences, and sometimes even disease or the use of drugs or alcohol. While a number of individuals have studied the  various factors that impact personality, one of the most notable is Hans Eysenck, one of the worlds most influential psychologists. Eysencks theories, however, were not always received without controversy.  Paramount among his many controversies was his belief in inherent differences in intelligence according to race (Schatzman, 1997). Integral to this belief was Eysencks development of his personality  theory. What would become Eysencks personality theory was undoubtedly the result of many factors in his life, including the fact that he was  a Jew and born in Germany during a time preceding the horrors of World War II. He would study psychology by default since he did not have the academic  prerequisites for acceptance into more serious scientific disciplines at college (Schatzman, 1997).
