This paper explains the importance of these functions and explains which function is the most important to our society and why.  LAW ENFORCEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES As protectors of public safety, law enforcement officials have several important functions to carry out, all of which are considered extremely important. Not only must  they be "impartial investigators"1 but they must also collect evidence, interview witnesses and watch over the crime scene when the occasion calls for it. As service providers law  enforcement officials might be called upon to do such miscellaneous things as come to the aid of a stranded motorist, answer questions for lost tourists, and even keep on the  lookout for pets that have gotten out of their yard. By keeping a high profile on the streets the law enforcement officials can help curtail crime simply by being  there so that the public knows they are under watchful and vigilant eyes by the upholders of law and order. As to their duties of order maintenance many times the  public sees policemen conducting traffic around the scene of an accident, being visible for crowd control purposes at public events, directing traffic at sporting events and just generally ensuring that  there are no tie-ups in the smooth running of anything in the public areas. This helps to curtail possible violence that might arise as hot tempers flare during traffic  snarls or when crowds become unruly. As law enforcement officers their function is, of course, to solve crimes such as burglaries and homicides, collect evidence at crime scenes, interview potential  suspects and appear in court when cases come to trial. WHICH OF THESE FUNCTIONS IS DEEMED MOST IMPORTANT? Everything law enforcement officers do can be considered important
