    with numerous reports on binge drinking and the resulting intoxication being blamed for increasing levels violence, especially in young men, higher elves of crime and disorderly conduct as well as  the negative health consequences that can be associated with alcohol (Bennetto, 2004; Gill, 2002). This means that there are a number of negative aspects that appear to be correlated with  increased alcohol consumption young people. In order to determine the best ways of reducing or mitigating the problem it is first essential that the problem can be defined.  It is over simplistic to argue that the problem is the increased alcohol consumption. The issue is why there has been an crease in the level of alcohol consumption, understanding  the changing pattern of use from a social and cultural aspect. 2. Purpose for the Study The paper will aim to identify and quantify the social and cultural aspects,  influences and perceptions of drinking by young people in Britain . One of the areas which has received an increased level of attention in the media is the occurrence of  binge drinking, this is usually defined as drinking more than drinking more than five drinks in a row (Gill, 2002). The research  will look at the reasons behind all increases in alcohol consumption in young people in which will be defined as people aged 25 years or under, but particular attention will  be paid to the phenomenon of binge drinking. The study is necessary due to the high number of negative health and societal issues that have a proven causal correlation  with increased alcohol consumption. The short term problems are already apparent, there is the violence and crime associated with the consumption, but there are also the long term health consequences
