    the "51st state," while others think of it as a foreign country. Of course, neither perception is accurate. There are tight bonds between the U.S. and Puerto Rico in many  areas but one that is particularly obvious is the popularity of the island as a tourism destination site for huge numbers of North Americans. Puerto Rico welcomes over four million  tourists annually with more than half of them being from Canada or the continental United States. In order to adequately deal with such an influx, Puerto Ricos tourism industry must  rely on the most modern of information technology systems. Connecting the Travel Component Dots Since the advent of electronic data transfer, virtually all aspects of commerce, business, government, even  education have transformed to take full advantage of the immediacy of information offered electronically. Whether a consumer does his/her banking electronically or books their airline reservations online, the sharing  and distribution of information has evolved beyond what could have been imagined less than a decade ago. However, in the opening years of the 21st century, it is clear  that electronic data transfer can and will be enhanced even further and that the travel industry is one of the prime candidates to benefit from such advances. Tourism in Puerto  Rico is no exception to that rule. In fact, tourists visiting Puerto Rico may actually expect more since they often think of the island as something of a Latin version  of Hawaii, and should therefore be equally as technologically up-to-date. In fact, according to Selwitz (1993) points out that tourism, especially the hotel industry, has been more aware than  most in terms of what certain information linkages can accomplish for it. He explains that as early as 1989, 22 hotel firms formed a joint venture called The Hotel Industry
