Racial Quotas in Business: Analysis of a Case Study

    Number of Pages: 7

    Summary of the research paper:

This 7 page paper looks at a case study regarding a plant that had not hired many black workers. They are required to place fifty percent of black workers in a new program designed for 13 employees, but it seems that most of the white workers have seniority. Because seniority is supposed to be considered as well, how can the firm adequately choose? The case is evaluated and recommendations made. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

noted that the plant, which had been opened in 1958, seemed to have fewer black workers than average. Therefore, instead of hiring about the same percentage of blacks at the  firm that existed in the work force, the percentage would be much lower. This was something provable and not mere speculation. For example, it was reported that "by 1965, although  39 percent of the local work force was black, Kaiser had hired only 4.7 percent blacks" (Velasquez, 2002). Time would pass. The company was subject to the law and  also to union rules and a new rule would change everything at the plant. It was noted that half of the positions in the "crafts training program" would be allotted  for blacks, and this would take place until the playing field was level at Kaiser. In other words, half of those positions would go to African Americans until Kaisers percentage  of blacks were similar to what the work force held. Thus, if the workforce contained about forty percent blacks, then the plant had to have that percentage as well. The  training program, according to union rules, had to be also in order of seniority (2002). There were therefore two criteria which were race and seniority. When the program began,  thirteen workers in all were chosen that were equivalent to six white employees and seven blacks (Velasquez, 2002). The case involves a young, white man with a good track record  and someone who is a family man (2002). Brian Weber really wanted to get one of the training positions as his job was considered semi-skilled and he really, truly desired  to move up (2002). He did some research and found out that he had more seniority than two of the black workers chosen (2002). It would seem that Weber would
