appears to be very true, work from the time of his first marriage is dull minimalist and depressing. However, later works, when the influence of his second and more positive
relationship with Tess Gallagher is seen, he has more expansive work, that also offers some solace. In this later work there is also a change in the way relationships between
men and woman are portrayed. IT is interesting to look at the stories as they indicate how Carver saw relationships taking place and the rules that govern interaction between men
and women. How they are not the soft with happy endings as seen in many literary works, but how the relationships are harsh as a result of real life. Often
is appears the men are unable to understand the perspective of the women. In the stories there is a high level of interdependence that is shown to result in
ultimate disappointment. In Gazebo there is a married couple, Duane and Holly, who are both hotel managers. The story takes place just after Duane has had an affair with a
maid. Prior to the affair it was unlikely they were happy, in snippets of conversion their lives appear to be much less that what they hoped for at collage. However,
the betrayal by Duane despite the beauty of Holly. Carver starts to indicted the way he values women by their looks, this is seen in other stories as well. Holly
has tried to forgive him, but cannot, she has tried inside and outside of the bedroom, but only sees a man who has let her down ands cheated. With that
disappointment something inside herself has dies, the future then becomes much bleaker which is reflected when Duane states "There was this funny thing of anything could happen now that we
