The first of these two elements looks at the personal themselves and is the internal part of the analysis, the latter two section, the opportunities  and threats focus on the macro environment and influences which may influence the individual and their development or the value of their skills. For example, if a graduate is looking  for a job there may be threats from other graduates that are competing, as well as from individuals that already have professional or other on the job skills. The  analysis will provide a useful fountain from which to plan for the future, including future professional development and career planning. The plan that results should build on strengths and take  advantage of opportunities. However, the main thrust of the plan will need to focus on the areas which require development, which are the weaknesses and threats. Weaknesses are anything personal  development that can be identified as requiring further attention. For example, these may be personal skills and characteristics, for example communication skills, leadership skills or even aspects such as personal  appearance. However, weaknesses may also be gaps in knowledge, which may require the acquisition of knowledge from outside sources, for example a graduate seeking to compete in an administrative environment  with others that have MBAs, may benefit from undertaking an MBA for themselves. Threats also indicate potential areas of development. For example, changes in legislation, as well as changes in  the border environment, such as the economic environment, may impact on the way the industry in which the student wishes to work is able to offer work. Therefore, by looking  ahead to potential changes, and ensuring the personal development plans take into account the changes the individual with the well-placed to deal with those changes as they occur.
