    Summary of the research paper:

    This 50 page paper looks at the way in which national identities are created and represented in the mass media and applies this to the study of the Turkish national identity in the Turkish and the European media specifically looking at the Turkish goal of joining the European Union (EU). The paper outlines the goals and objectives and then considers the approaches to mass media that can be applied that concern the way it is created and the way it is consumed. Models used include science and the media, industry and the media, corporations and the media, globalisation, technology and the media and political economics. Consumption is considered with reference to reception theories. The paper then looks at the way Turkey is represented in the media internally and in the west, followed by primary research that uses content analysis to look at media articles. Introduction The international nature of the media has created an increasing awareness of global in issues in the general population.  The news, as it is reported, as well as other media reports and representations, creates an image in the mind of the audience. This creates a perception of national identities  for different countries. Each may have both positive and negative aspects. Often the internal impressions created by the media and the external impression will be divergent, but the articles and  representations may be interlinked with each other, undertaken in response or influenced by the other. The media has a great deal of power. The aim of this research paper  is to ascertain the way in which the power is used to represent national identities in the media with specific attention paid to the way in which Turkey is represented  in the press. 1.1 Research Aim Using an analytical approach the aim of the research is to identify the way in which national identities are represented in the media, using  the case of Turkey. Turkey has been on the cusp of the east and the west. Geographically part of the country is in Europe and part in Asia and the
