today are reminiscent of the use of "new and improved" that marketers wore completely out several years ago. In our quest for speed and instantaneous communications and connectivity, only  makers of the fastest servers can hope to gain market share in their greatly depressed industry. "Fastest" Defined Designation of the "worlds fastest"  generally is supported by performance results gained through testing by the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC). SPEC maintains no less than a dozen server classes, however, so the designation  of "fastest" also must be qualified by the type of server being tested. The winners of the Linux and Java divisions, as example, both legitimately can claim to be  the "worlds fastest" servers. This is borne out in the results of a search based on those terms. IBM, Sun, Zeus, Novell and others all claim to be  the "worlds fastest" and therefore by extension have the worlds best servers. In many cases, those winning speedy performance distinctions may not be  the best choice for a specific application. When shopping for servers, however, and when speed is of primary importance, the list of SPECs class winners creates a good beginning  point for the search. Attributes of SPEC Winners For web use, the SPECweb99 benchmark is most often used to compare server performance.  The SPECweb99 benchmark "simulates a server that supports multiple Web home pages with rotating advertisements, customized page creation, user registration and other dynamic operations" (IBM eServer Beats Sun and HP,  2002; p. 1008126w1511). This may not be overly important to a scientific journal archiving its past issues online, but it is critical in todays ecommerce environment. Online sellers
