Introduction It may be argued that all businesses have some type of strategy, although not all are purposefully planed  to the same extent and some strategies may be weaker than others. A major thrust of business studies and literature look at the way in which strategic planning may  take place and extol the virtue of different approaches to strategy. There is a general agreement regarding a contingency as approach; where different circumstances may require different types of strategy,  but also that the strategy chosen and the way it is implemented may be the difference between success, mediocre performance and failure. When looking at many of the theoretical  models that have been developed they have emerged in the western nations, and biased towards the commercial environment, where the models are applicable to the cultures and environments found where  they have been developed and as such may not be as applicable and predictable in the Middle East and in particular the United Arab Eremites (UAE) in the context of  public rather than the commercial sector. The aim of the paper is to assess the impact of different strategic approaches on the performance of firms located within the UAE.  1.1 Research Question The main research question is to assess the impact of strategic planning on the performance of public sector performance in  the UAE1.
