For another, the entire concept of "convenience" is close to anathema for a culture  that places more emphasis on relationships and moving slowly, rather than on closing deals as quickly as possible. Seven-Eleven Japan, however, has succeeded in the convenience store industry, and even  went on to buy out Southland Corporation during 1990, when the 7-Eleven founders were in bankruptcy court. Seven-Eleven Japan has also built a solid brand image in that country.  This paper will examine the SWOT of Seven-Eleven Japan (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Strength); while recommending some strategies to make the chain-store company  become even more profitable. History The history of Seven-Eleven Japan can be traced all the way back to the United States when,  during the 1940s, Southland Ice diversified into the convenience store business (Sutherland, 2002). In 1974, Southland Corporation, as it was called by then, granted an area franchise for Japan to  Ito-Yokado Ltd., which was a leading retailer in Japan (Sutherland, 2002). Ito-Yokado bought the master license for the name, but dropped the numeral "7" from the logo, instead, spelling it  out (Sutherland, 2002). By 1990, Seven-Eleven Japan had opened more than 4,000 stores, making it the largest chain of convenience stores in Japan (Sutherland, 2002)  During the 1980s, Seven Eleven Japan relied on Electronic Point of Sale and different merchandising systems, allowing the company to focus on the customer, to add value  to the product and service and to sharpen the store operations (Sutherland, 2002). In addition, Seven-Eleven Japan used its electronic network to take on different businesses, such as collecting payment
