Indeed, the very nature of service work is to provide a valuable service to the paying party; whether or not that particular service proves useful to anyone but  the recipient is not the question. Both sex work and prostitution have been commodified no differently than other forms of unwaged labor, however, the social stigma long attached to  this particular type of service work changes ones conception for the worse. Attaching the word work to pornography or prostitution only serves to confuse the already muddled attitudes about  this way of living when, in fact, it is no different from myriad other forms of feminized labor. "The reality of prostitution and sex trade today is extremely complex  and contains a multiplicity of forces, dimensions and players" (In The Belly Of The Beast). II. THE BASIS OF DISDAIN Sex work and prostitution were never meant to emancipate  women - perhaps that is the very reason why they are looked upon today as being both contemptible and sad. For the most part, women who engage in sex  work and prostitution are not there by choice; rather, extreme financial hardship, a teenager on the run or any one of myriad other reasons compel a large part of this  industry to do what they do. These women are no sooner able to assimilate into mainstream society than a crack cocaine user is, which is why they gravitate to  where others like themselves struggle to subsist, ultimately and inevitably perpetuating the vicious cycle. Others, however, are fully aware of their choices and contend that because women have the  upper hand when it comes to sex, it is both natural and smart to utilize ones assets for profit.
