Bryan Babcock for the Paperstore, Inc., April 2001 Introduction It is  always a mental challenge to consider how a work of art may reflect its creator. This classroom prompted discussion will determine if the setting of The Dolls House reflected  the authors philosophy, attitude or time and place in which he lived. Life of the Author (1828-1906) The first years of Ibsens childhood occurred in prosperous times; but when the  police raided the fathers alternative income source - a prosperous still, the condition of the home was rapidly down sized. Father took to drink and abuse; mother sought solace  in religion. In difficult times, children did the best they could with what they had. However we will see an overbearing husband, and a submissive wife appear  in Ibsens plays ( Brand, A Dolls House, and Ghosts. The bitter character of Hjalmar Ekdal in The Wild Duck was based on Ibsens father). We may not see  the same manners of behavior that he experienced as a child, but we will see the same attitudes One of the ways that has been recorded, that Ibsen amused  himself as child was to give puppet performances, for his siblings as well as for other children in the town. Think of how a puppeteer has the ability to  dominate the whole performance, and certainly things get done the way that the puppeteer things they should be done, not the characters in the play themselves. We have even  kept the actions of the puppeteer in our own language - if someone upsets us, we may use a "puppet" variant -he really yanked by cord-or string - or chain.
