    1. Introduction Shell has undergone a large amount of change, these changes have been the result of the environment in which they operate, the changes have focused in create  more value for shareholders as well as adapt due to the way in which the industry and the competitors are adapting. In many ways the actual strategies have remained the  same, with global interests in oil and chemicals and the desire to increase profits. The strategies have been developed in such a way as to retain the separation governance and  strategy. However the changes may also be argued as being very overdue and the strategy one of catching up rather than taking a lead. The strategy was to increase  efficiency and create more value. This also involved major cost reductions, reduction in the number of staff and the closure of many offices were tools that were a part of  this strategy. However, even with these the large complex structure remained. It was transformed from the three dimensional matrix to the business sector based operations. This was still a complex  organisation and was a model tat other firms were moving away from towards flatter structures. 2. Organisation Structure and Change The majority of  organisations have structures that were formulated for effective operations over a century ago. Technology was very different, computers had not been invented and information based systems were not present. Even  communication systems were severely constrained leading to an environment where decisions and information had a slower and more limited value. Even where more modern structures are in place they still  tend to be bureaucratic based on models from the 1950s, where there was a lack or information, rather than an excess. This can be Argued as the case with Shell,
