In terms of contemporary justice, this is similarly defined as "individuals should be treated the same, unless they differ in ways that are relevant to the situation in which  they are involved". There are several ways to look at justice. Firstly, most people understand that idea that justice means that "everybody should be treated the same". Secondly, however, there  are instances where justice can also apply in situations in which some people are treated differently (Markkula, 2003). Situations in which people accept that justice has been served yet people  are treated differently are usually based on circumstances in which need, desert, contribution and effort are the criteria. In todays society, there are often everyday instances in which people  treat others unequally yet people accept these actions. People generally accept when people favor their own children over others in private and public situations and they are not deemed as  unjust. In a similar sense, people believe it is fair when those ahead of them in a theater line get their ticket first. Also, most people believe it is fair  when the government provides social and financial assistance to those people who are not able to provide their own care (Markkula, 2003). There are also several situations which exist in  which individuals who make larger contributions to projects also reap the larger benefits or acclimation and people generally do not feel that an injustice has occurred. These are situations in  which people are treated differently from others yet people do not generally deem these actions as unjust. Generally, it is believed that when using the criteria "need, desert, contribution, and  effort, we acknowledge as justifying differential treatment, then, are numerous" (Markkula, 2003). Instances in the work force are those the most controversial in regards to what treatment is considered just
