Which then, is more important and what are the strengths and limitations of each? It is important to discuss this matter especially in an age which is becoming increasingly
global, and where the actions of individuals greatly impact the greater whole. Therefore, as we examine the strengths and weaknesses of each, I would argue that social responsibility is
more important since the effect has much greater impact. Individual Rights Versus Social Responsibility Lets begin the discussion of individual rights versus
social responsibility with an extreme, but real-life example. There was a little boy named James Bulger who was four years old and was killed by two boys both aged
ten (Risman, 2002). According to the judge in this particular case, these boys became worthy of release at age 19 (Risman, 2002). Now, clearly the individual rights
of these two boys are not only being honored in terms of the law, but their release from prison allows these two boys to carry on with their lives and
to enjoy complete freedom according to the law (Risman, 2002). Upon their release, they will be able to get jobs, go to school, drive cars, go to movies, rent
apartments, eat out at restaurants, go to sleep any time they choose, and so forth. In other words, their rights as individuals will be complete in terms of what
society allows all individuals. However, what about contrasting this with social responsibility. Obviously, they took all of the individual rights of James Bulger away the moment they
