    originally written by Sophocles around 2500 years ago. The classic tragedy has since served as the basis for a number of writers work. One of the most interesting  of these spin-offs is Jean Anouilhs Twentieth Century classic by the same title. In this French version of the classic tale young Antigone is once again the tragic heroine  but with a slightly different twist in plot and setting than the character presented by Sophocles. As is presented in Sophocles version as well, Antigones father, King Oedipus, and  brother, Polynices, are both dead. The brother has been slain, in fact, by Antigones other brother Eteocles as part of a plot to gain the throne of Thebes from  their uncle King Creon who has actually orchestrated the murderous plot. At the death of Polynices Creon proclaims him the villain and Eteocles the hero. Because of this  proclamation Polynices family is forbidden to bury him, a decree which Antigone willingly defies. Her defiance, of course, results in her own death, just as it does in Sophocles  version of Antigone. It can be contended that while Antigone is the primary character in these plays, the degree of her actions is shaped by the other characters around  her. Creon is of particular importance in shaping the character Antigone in both Sophocles version of the play and Anouilhs. Anouilhs  and Sophocles Antigone alike are characterized by a number of admirable traits. She is not only courageous, she is sensitive and caring. Indeed, it is her tendency to  want to jump to the aid of others in distress which lands her in the predicament in which she finds herself. She is also naive and vulnerable. but it
