have higher limits and may be anywhere from 50 to 80 miles per hour. There has been debate about this issue for some time. Many drivers ordinarily drive a bit  over the speed limit by about 5 or 10 miles per hour or more. They reason that they will lose time if they go the speed limit so they accelerate,  even if it is an illegal practice. Of course, speed limits are not determined arbitrarily. They are determined by the speed at which about 85% of the drivers are going,  which rests on the assumption that the drivers make good judgments based on the conditions that they find themselves in (Turnbell, 2009). Of course, with the crashes that have occurred  as a result of excessive speed, one ought to question the judgment of these motorists. Clearly, states should set speed limits based on safety. It seems that 60 miles  per hour is a reasonable speed for anyone to go. If someone is in a hurry, or simply wants to make good time on a trip, he or she ought  to rethink priorities. With anything anyone does, safety ought to come first. Implementing safety strategies does take time, but it is clearly the best option. Further, decreasing ones speed will  result in fuel savings ("Slow Down and Save," 2009). As far as driving goes, there should be a national mandatory speed limit in the United States. The limit should not  exceed 60 miles per hour. II. The Maximum Speed Limit on all highways and roads in the United States should not be lowered to 60  miles per hour It may be true that many states set speed limits rather arbitrarily, or at least that is how it appears on the surface.
