    intended to achieve the organizations goals (Business Dictionary 2010). Peter Drucker suggested there are two basic tasks for management, marketing and innovation (Business Dictionary 2010). It is generally accepted  that all managers perform four major functions: planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling (Allen and Gilmore 2010). These are universal functions and each has sub-categories. Staffing, for instance, incorporates recruiting,  hiring, training, assessing performance, compensation, incentives and other motivation programs (Allen and Gilmore 2010). Each requires a significant amount of decision making. 1.2. Management Theories It is important for managers  to know and understand management theory and to be able to apply the principles incorporated into those theories (Olum 2004). He goes on to say that managers must "blend principles  with realities" (Olum 2004). Principles are fundamental truths that provide insight in the relationships between variables (Olum 2004). As management becomes more complex, it becomes even more important to understand  the relationships between the variables. There are a number of management schools of thought. These include: the classical school, quantitative or management science school of though, the behavioral school, the  contingency school, and the systems school of thought (Barnett 2010). The classical school is the oldest beginning in about the 1880s with scientific, bureaucratic and administrative management emerging from this  school in the 1880s, 1920s and 1940s (Barnett 2010). This school emphasizes efficiency (Barnett 2010). The behavioral school emerged in the 1930s and again took precedence in the 1950s (Barnett  2010). This focuses on understanding human behavior and it is from this school that human relations became important and an integral part of management as does motivation and job satisfaction.  The quantitative school took the focus in the 1940s and then, again beginning in the 1950s when management information systems were discussed (Barnett 2010).
