    of any situation in which certain tasks must be accomplished in the most efficient manner. Teams are particularly appropriate in a situation where knowledge must be acquired and applied.  This is true both in the occupational arena and in the educational arena. The purpose of this paper is to present the key criteria which separates an effective team  from an ineffective team when the goal is to acquire the knowledge necessary in a particular workplace dilemma and to apply that knowledge to overcome the problem. In a  scenario in which a team needs to be more competent in a particular occupational dilemma, for example, one of the fist tasks at hand for the team is the improvement  of team capability. Self concept of the individual members is critical in this goal. The criteria which will become critical in this goal are effective team organization, good  communication, assertiveness, timing, and prioritization. The first critical member of a team in a workplace environment is the team leader. In most  cases, however, it is beneficial to rotate leaders periodically in that with that rotation each team member becomes better rounded and more in tune to the responsibilities which are at  hand. Effective leadership in the workplace can provide that mental edge, that self-concept, which allows an employee to excel. With forethought and planning a leader can increase employee  motivation and this equates to better job performance. It can be argued that self concept is a central variable to employee performance. It is tremendously important both in  how a person perceives others, himself, and his surroundings. Rotation of the leadership responsibilities on a periodic basis allows the enhancement of self concept as does an effective relationship
