forms of experimentation that speak largely of modernism. Her work offers the reader difficult language, in the voice of Celie, and yet flows and develops throughout the novel. In this  story we are presented with many different characters, all of whom provide a unique voice for the African American experience. We have Celie, who is perhaps the most oppressed and  uneducated individual in the story. And, then we have her sister. Nettie who is more educated and also finds herself less socially oppressed, offering a look at a higher social  position. There is Shug who is a wild and perhaps stereotypical Black woman who is confident in her sexuality, and in her particular form of power. We also have Sophia  who is a symbol of how destructive the society is in terms of black women. Sophia was a woman who was proud and intelligent, but who, through beatings and a  loss of hope, becomes nothing more than a shell of a woman. The Color Purple The two most powerful voices we see in the novel are that of  Celie and Nettie. In the beginning of the novel Celie is incredibly inept at writing and her words are often difficult to read through. However, what we see is the  sad position of a young girl who is oppressed in every possible way. Her sister, however, becomes far more educated and travels with missionaries, becoming less oppressed and more intelligent.  Throughout the story we see Celies development in the United States and Netties experiences in Africa as she raises Celies children. Through these two lenses we are given two  very real and powerful stories. Symbolically speaking one may argue that the freedom for an African in their homeland of Africa seems far better than the United States, but that
