of research. For many years, scientists, medical researchers, and practitioners have explored the use of acupuncture and acupressure to alter nerve impulses and reduce painful impulses in muscles, joints  and limbs. Physical therapists have recognized the benefits of the use of this kind of stimulation to create physical improvements in their patients. As an extension of this  process, acupuncture has been utilized with increasing frequency, though medical research demonstrating the effects of acupuncture is limited. Purpose of the Study The purpose of this research proposal  is to consider the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of lower back pain, as compared to the outcomes of the use of pharmacological support. Because prescribed medication is  one of the most frequent treatment options for lower back pain, assessing this alternative and holistic treatment option provides a basis for new and emerging treatment models (See Watson, 1985;  Watson, 1988). Research Hypothesis The hypothesis for this study is: The use of acupuncture in response to lower back pain is an effective treatment option, when  compared to the use of prescribed medication. Assumptions There are a number of assumptions that are necessary to begin this study. The first assumption is that  participants in the study required some kind of practitioner response as a result of their lower back pain. The second assumption is that the acupuncture procedure, done under clinical  supervision, is consistent among the patients who participate. The third assumption is that participating patients who have been prescribed pain medication will adhere to their medication regime. Finally,  the study is based on the assumption that individuals who participate in the acupuncture group will not supplement their treatment with over-the-counter or prescribed medications. Limitations Because there are
