    A number of critics have said that the Macombers in Hemmingways "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" are working out the perfect murder due  to the wifes desire to castrate and weaken her husband. While this theory predominates, it is obvious Hemingway was trying to understand the characteristics of being female. He often put  his male characters within his own concepts of the feminine as a means of understanding them. The fact that he is thought to misunderstand women as a gender is irrelevant.  He loved them and hated them, and he wanted to explore them like a science. Therefore, he was constantly trying to undermine  the feminine ideals he held of women by drawing his female characters so he could explore them in a new light. Because of this underlying need, he created a lot  of misdirection about gender and gender relationships, and in this effort, he failed. But in the overall study of his conceptualization of the feminine, Hemingway succeeded by turning the tables  on gender. Momentarily, he was able to redraw the feminine and one particular success was in "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber."  Review of the Binaries Argument One way that Hemmingway explored the question was in looking at his characters as opposites.  Wilson and Macomber, both male, are complete opposites in personality. Though they come together for the one happy moment in Francis life, the rest of the time the atypical Francis  is exploring what it is like to be feminine. By that definition, he is looking at what it means to be passive, unempowered and manipulative. Hes wondering why beauty is
