    farming family: his background was relatively affluent, and as his family set great store by education, he was sent to school in Odessa, where his intellectual capabilities became apparent. He  later moved to Nicolayev to study mathematics, and during this period of his education became interested in revolutionary theories and practice.  He played a significant part in the founding of the South Russia Workers Union (1897) and the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (1898). However,  his political activities were disapproved of by the authorities, and he was arrested and deported to Siberia in 1900. Two years later, he escaped and fled to London, where he  encountered Lenin, with whom he worked on the staff of the communist publication Iskra.  Even though it appeared that the two were in many ways alike in their political thinking, the following year found Lenin leading the Bolshevik party while Trotsky supported the  Mensheviks. In 1905 Trotsky was able to return to Russia and participate in the revolution, and was elected President of the St Petersburg soviet: however, by 1907 he had again  been deported to Siberia. Again, he escaped and returned to London, where he met Stalin.  In 1917, when the Czar was finally overthrown, he returned to Russia and became Lenins second in command in the Bolshevik party. The following year he  was put in charge of the military, being appointed Commissar for the army and the navy. However, after the death of Lenin, Stalin and Trotsky came more and more into
