    can be gleaned by exploring not only the artist, but the time period in which it was made. Leonardo Da Vinci had quite an intriguing past. Yet, in evaluating works  of art, sometimes there is not a lot of information about an artist. In such cases, one has to rely on other factors, much of which largely come from the  works themselves. Other aspects such as specific parts of the painting allow one to analyze the picture in a new way. Indeed, one can find out much about a culture  from in-depth investigation of a single work of art as well as to analyze a work of art by first delving into the culture. By putting the work  or art--or the Mona Lisa in the previous example-- in the context of when, how, and by whom it was made, and investigating the meanings and uses of the piece,  a picture of the culture begins to emerge. For example, in looking at art being done today, one sees that contemporary concerns are addressed. Recent events at the World  Trade Center prompted an artist to render a sculpture of a nude woman falling to her death. As many people did jump from the buildings as they collapsed, this rendition  had proved controversial. In fact, all art is controversial. Several years ago, a show at the Brooklyn Museum created controversies because the artist used elephant dung to create one of  the works. While offensive to some, it is a medium that is used in the country in which the artist is from. To some extent, artists creating works highlight  the concerns of the people of the time period. Culture also enters the picture, and when studying Asian art specifically, there are certain themes which become quite apparent. Whether one
