ABOUT THE POWER AND THE GLORY In this book Graham Greene spins an interesting tale of 1930s Mexico and the  attempt to eradicate the Church from one Mexican state. There is one priest left: called the whiskey priest for obvious reasons - and as he flees to a safer  region he is joined by an eclectic group of misfits. Something holds the priest back, even though he does not feel qualified to give rites any longer. "When  he was gone it would be as if God in all this space between the sea and the mountains ceased to exist. Wasnt it his duty to stay, even if  they despised him, even if they were murdered for his sake? Even if they were corrupted by his example?" (Greene PG). As the tale continues the priest comes to terms  with godliness and love, but finds himself slipping back into his old ways. The interesting question we must ask ourselves about this book is how and what compelled Greene  to write it. Did he, in fact, base some of the book on experiences in his social and intellectual life? The book is an interesting mixture of Catholicism  and the ways in which people fight against it. Perhaps the book tells us more about the author than we might think. CATHOLICISM It can be argued that  the Churchs influence is quite considerable in that it represents the most important social institution with the singular exception of family. The significance of church interaction is undeniable; to  be sure, its influence is felt at a number of social and political levels. Inasmuch as the Church has its roots directly related to Mexico, it is easy to understand
