They utilize words to describe music and how music makes one feel, they use words to describe the importance and the power of art, and they often use art  as symbolic presentations of various themes within their works. In the case of Willa Cather we find a woman who uses the power and the inherent presence, or nature, of  art to help develop her story and the lead character in her story. She also uses art to help define the life of an artist and the unique conditions of  the artist. In the following paper we examine some of Willa Cathers uses of art and the artist in her novel "The Song of the Lark." Art and  the Artist From the most simplistic of perspectives we find that Willa Cathers story is a tale of a young woman who is a artist in the making. It  is the tale of her journey into her life as an artist and a tale of discovery as it involves many different facets of the artistic world. In the beginning  this woman, Thea, is a young woman who is a simple farm girl in many ways. But, she longs for more. She longs for that expression that can perhaps only  come through art and through living the life of an artist. In the beginning we do not necessarily see that Thea herself is sure of what she wants, for  she is young and has no words for such deeply imbedded realities. But, we see those around her understanding that she is somehow different. We see the doctor having a  special and powerful relationship with Thea and we see her instructor and his wife powerfully drawn to her.
