Introduction Our challenge in this discussion is to examine the nature of "Gabriele" in Thomas Manns  novelle Tristan, We will look at the relationship of this woman to her art and her death. Are they related. Or was her death a mere coincidence?  Or is there another possibility? The story (1903) The husband: To help his wife recover from an unknown malady since the birth of their son, Herr Anton Kloeterjahn, takes  his wife Gabriele to a sanatorium. We are told that her husband is an efficient wholesale merchant. Since reading Mann can sometimes be like detective work with certain  bits of information, behind other bits of information, we should not believe that Mann has given us this lightly. Therefore we might ask ourselves, how is an "efficient" wholesale  merchant, different than an efficient plumber, or an efficient gardener? One thing would be that he is used to getting the "most for his money." Not only  that he is very efficient at getting the most for his money. It is my feeling that he had decided that Gabriele had been "sick" long enough. It  was not an efficient use of wife and mother. Therefore it was time to "get her cured" and move on. With this attitude we might guess, that he
