Conrad himself was not healthy and living in early  nineteenth century Russia which was not easy. One can glean before even reading the book, that Conrads heart had been broken many times. In the book itself, there are many  hearts of darkness. An avid sailor, Conrad wrote about what he knew. The plot of "Heart of Darkness" involves Marlow, the protagonist, who does have a heart of darkness.  It is important to point out that the idea that someones heart is composed of darkness may have a variety of meanings. For example, ones heart may be dark because  they are thought to have no heart. Unlike the tin man in the Wizard of Oz, someone with this type of heart of darkness really does not care at all.  Evil is laced in this persons vital organ. People know others who possess such a heart of darkness. Manifestations of this come through in the form of bigotry and criminality.  It may come through in the eyes of an uncaring teacher who reprimands a child in front of a class. The heart that is replete with darkness may be present  in the serial killer, who through circumstances, lost all feeling and compassion for other human beings. One can see that there are a variety of hearts of darkness, but the  difference is subtle. While evil does not necessarily lurk in the heart of darkness, the door is open for it to come in. Another type of heart of darkness may  be one where someone is hurt over and over again. They are immersed in grief. In this grief, the door is open for evil to enter. The grief may be
