    similar experience. Therefore, travel writing becomes part reporting, part tour guide and in a sense, partly voyeuristic. The style and technique utilized in a travel writing piece can vary widely,  but most will agree that the subject oriented travel story tends to be the type of story that is preferred by editors and seems to be preferred by readers. A  subject oriented travel story is more than just the typical travel guide and dry reporting. Subject oriented stories function on several levels. First there is the actual trip, the outward  journey to a destination or an event. In addition, however, there is an inward journey or destination of the soul that also accompanies the physical travel. Generally speaking, then, these  types of travel oriented stories are typically written in first person with personal anecdotes utilized heavily. In fact, a good case can be made for the subject oriented travel  story being laid out much like a novel. In the first section of a novel, the characters are introduced and their desires made known. This is also true of the  lede in a travel piece. Then, in the second section of the novel, the obstacles that will impede the heros progress toward his hopes and desires are revealed. Also,  an integral part of the travelogue. These obstacles are met and either overcome, or the obstacles serve as catalysts to propel the characters into yet another situation. Of course,  the subject oriented travel article is not going to be quite as long as the general novel or novella, but the same structure works. The introduction must start with  a punch, some sort of gimmick, statistic, or moving story. The first paragraph is extremely important, too, as it must have the elements which set up the story and pull
